After Stylepeaches' review, I was really excited to try out Schwarzkopf's silver hair dye, so the last time I bleached my roots, I put this over the top. A bit of a mixed-bag review from me if I'm honest. I bought this when I was having a bit of a 'hair emergency'- I'd just bleached my roots, but I forgot I'd left my ride or dye grey hair dye (Makki professional colouring mask in grey) at home, so I really needed something that I could buy from town quickly, and something I knew would probably work.
Price//
at £6.50, this was pretty affordable. But the tube is pretty small- only 50ml. I only did my roots and I used up half the tube- if you've got long or thick hair, you're probably gonna need two tubes. It came with a pair of gloves, the 50ml tube of colour and two packs of conditioner.Before//
My hair was mostly silver (from faded Makki grey), but my roots were a custard yellow because I'd just bleached them.
Application//
Because it's a fairly thick paste, I actually found it quite hard to apply this. You're supposed to just put it onto (gloved) hands and smooth it out with your fingertips, but it was quite hard to smooth it out and get an even finish. I think if you mixed it with the conditioner you'd get a better application but the colour would be lighter, which wasn't what I was going for. I still managed to get the colour on though. The first time I tried this, I left it on for the minimum 20 minutes because I was in a huge hurry to go out, and the second time I left it for the full 30. It didn't seem to make much difference in terms of how long the colour lasted, but I think I got a more even finish the second time.After//
The first time I used it- it covered my yellow roots pretty well and blended in perfectly with the rest of my hair:
I think I managed to get a more even finish the second time:Longevity//
This is where it really fell down for me- it says on the package up to 12-15 washes, but after only 2 washes it had almost completely faded. I had used colour protect shampoo and stuff, but I think grey is notorious for washing out quickly.
After only one wash it looked pretty yellow in strong light:
And after two washes you could definitely see a yellow tinge to my roots: Did it stain my hair?//
Getting weird tints left in my hair is always a worry when I try out new grey or cool hair colours, and luckily this one didn't leave any nasty green streaks.Overall//
It was a nice colour! I'd definitely recommend this to people who are doing silver hair for the first time, as it looks lovely, plus it's easy to get hold of. However, I can't see myself using this again because it is such a bother to keep re dying my hair every two washes. Honestly I think that next time I want 'silver' hair, I'll just use makki colouring mask in grey and mix it with more conditioner, as it's a lot easier to use for me (although it definitely doesn't leave your hair feeling as silky this one does.)Thanks for reading! -Amy xoxo
The best grey hair dye?! Makki professional hair colouring mask in grey review and before and after// Japanese side streets// Birthday Haul post//
It's a shame that the colour only lasted two washes... you'd think it would last a lot longer! And super expensive if you're going to have to keep dying it. It is a lovely colour though!
ReplyDeleteLizzie Bee // hello lizzie bee
Yeah, I'm definitely going to have to go back using the makki dye. It's a shame though because I really did like the colour of this one. Ah well :') I'm glad I tried it at least :)
DeleteSchwarzkopf now do a permanent silver colour in their Metallics range!
ReplyDeleteThanks for letting me know! <3 I think I might pick that one up and try it next, if it's as pretty as this one was then I'm sold!
DeleteI love the colour BUT>>>>>>>I have always had good condition hair, but after using this product, I cant use enough conditioner. My hair is coming out in handfuls. I will never use this again.By the way I am an ex hairdresser. I found this the most aggressive colour I have ever used.
ReplyDeleteAlso having been complimented on my colour, the lady on the check-out told me her hair started falling out after using this product.
ReplyDeleteYikes!! I'm so sorry to hear that ;_; and I hope your hair recovers ;_; Did you use the one with bleach in it?
DeleteI have natural grey hair can i use this live steel silver safely
ReplyDeleteHi, I think it's safe to use but I'm not sure how well it will show up on hair that's already grey?
DeleteYou should use a silver shampoo to bring out the beauty of your natural grey.
DeleteHow do i buy this
ReplyDeleteHi, you can buy it from Boots or Superdrug in the UK :)
DeleteHi, I've just bought this to tone my hair for a few washes before I go back to the salon for a proper one. I'm wondering whether to do the bright silver or mix it with the conditioner for the pastel style? Which would you suggest because I can't find a review of the pastel colour anywhere!
ReplyDeleteHiya, I'd go with the bright silver because it faded pretty quickly for me anyway tbh! Let me know what you ended up doing and how it went! :)
DeleteDidn't work on my sons hair
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that! Hope you find something that works for him :)
DeleteIt didn't turn mine silver which I was so excited to do it. It made mine darker. I'm crying in the inside over this. I had such high hopes. Now I have dark brown hair and blonde hair. I was blond but growing my greys out. Now my beautiful grey is no more.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear! I used the semi-permanent steel silver and it washed out super quickly, hope yours does too!
DeleteNot sure if I should use this got a little bit of pink left in from a permanent dye and not bleached my hair what should I do plese x
ReplyDeleteIf you've not bleached your hair, I'm not sure if this would even show up over the pink to be honest unless your hair is extremely pale to begin with. But you could always contact Schwarzkopf and see what they say! x
