Sooo, I've been bleaching my own hair for about 6 years now, with minimal breakage/damage. I take a lot of care over my hair and I've managed to avoid any real horror stories so far. I mean, my hair is a bit damaged but it still is intact and soft
Recently it's been super dry (and it's kind of frustrating because I have noooo idea what happened- I haven't done much differently) and instead of taking the hint and leaving it well alone, letting it get in better condition before I bleached it, I went ahead and did my roots anyway. Well, the long and short of it is that my hair looked pretty sad after bleaching it, and I had more breakage in my hair than normal. It was quite scary actually, because I have read many many horror stories when all someone's hair has just come out. Mine wasn't that bad, luckily (because I do follow the instructions on the bleach and look after my hair) buuuut I thought my hair could do with some extra TLC.
I'm not normally an expensive product sort of gal- the most I've ever spent on a hair mask has been about £10- but desperate times call for desperate measures and I decided to pick up a bottle of the Olaplex no 3 as I've heard a lot of people really liked it.
Cost//
I found it for £17 on amazon, which is not too bad actually, considering the RRP is £30. It is quite a small bottle at 100 ml though.Application//
My hair is quite short and very fine, so this bottle will probably last me 5 or 6 treatments, but those with thicker hair will probably get through this very quickly. The product has no smell, and it was easy enough to apply. Just wet your hair and towel dry it, leave the product in for a while, then shampoo and wash it out.
I left it on for about an hour while I was writing an essay. The instructions says 10 minutes, but that it's ok to leave on for longer, and I know my hair could use all the help it can get.
Then I washed it off and left my trusty Bleach London Reincarnation Mask in for about half an hour.
Results//
I could actually feel my hair was smoother and softer when I was washing it out, which was exciting! It's not a *miracle worker* but I've used it a couple of times since then, and it seems to be doing my hair good. Although, I am using my Bleach London hair mask too, so I don't think it's just the Olaplex alone, but still.Side note: I'd definitely recommend the reincarnation mask! It's only £7 but it's sooo moisturising and soothing and one tube lasts for ages.
This is what my hair looked like after using it a couple of times- basically the same. Olaplex 3 isn't a miracle worker, but
Overall//
Olaplex 3 is something I've been wanting to try for a while, and I'm glad I did. It seems to be doing my hair a lot of good. However, as it's a bit pricy, I don't think you need it unless your hair is doing particularly badly- I bought this in an emergency and it's been great, but if your hair isn't too damaged I'd say just stick to your normal hair mask. Hopefully I won't need to pick up another for a while, because it's a liitle out of my price range honestly. For my fellow Bleach haired gals, this is definitely worth a try, but I wouldn't say it's *essential* and it hasn't changed my hair game completely
Thanks for reading! If you've tried olaplex, how did you get on with it? Any bleached hair care product recommendations?

Longtime lurker on your blog, also been heavily bleaching my hair for the purpose of stupid colours for a full decade now and soon to start her hairdresser training with a view to becoming a colourist: Olaplex is fantastic, but -not- the No. 3. Sack it off entirely, mate, what you need is the No. 1 (bleach/colour additive) and the No. 2 ('bond perfector'). The No. 3 is just glorified deep conditioner. Luckily for us, in the years since Olaplex hit the salon world there's been plenty of imitators (usually called something '-plex') of the chemical technology, including one from the Bleach London brand that you seem to love a lot called Alex-plex. Try using the No. 1 Olaplex (or Bleach London Alex-plex, whatever) additive in your bleach, and following it up with the No. 2 on rinsing if you can. Some people have even gone as far as to use either the No. 1 or No. 2 on their own as a leave-in treatment; I can't vouch for using the No.1 on its own (far too spenny for that) but using the No. 2 for this works great. So yeah, keep your No. 3 as a lovely deep conditioner and spend the dollar on the additive and bond 'perfector' stages. It's worth it. Note: the additive increases processing time, but your hair will be far, far stronger for it.
ReplyDeleteOooh thank you for this! I will definitely have to try out the no 1 and no 2! (But yeah I might have to stick with knock offs because olaplex is pricy!) Thanks for telling me it increases the processing time too, I didn't know that! Best of luck with hairdresser training <3 <3
